Watercolours & sepias for sale'His intricate watercolours reveal him as a naturalist with a great interest in his subject'
'Watercolour and sepia lies in a thin, transparent layer across the paper, allowing the inherent reflective white of the paper to shine through. That is the pure tradition of watercolour painting. A watercolour has to be planned to allow for this, like a three-dimensional puzzle. I block out areas with a resist-medium, that will be ultimately left white. Resist is like a thin layer of latex which is painted on, dries quickly and can be rubbed off later. I use a wide, flat brush to apply washes of colours, right across the surface, as well as individual brush-strokes. This is how I evoke atmosphere in a landscape.'
'His meticulously fine yet robust watercolours have long been a favourite of the critics, who particularly praise his vibrantly lithe representations of animal movement and use of subtle toning to create works of great immediacy and poignancy'
'Many of my watercolours are small, so that the viewer has to look into the picture, entering into that world. I can create an imaginary world within the picture frame. Watercolour also lends itself to fine and detailed illustration of creatures and of landscape and to representation of gestures'.
'Indeed perhaps the most remarkable thing about his work could be that despite its draughtsmanly detail and precision it so powerfully atmospheric. Something that surely derives from his unique fascination and feeling for his subject'.
'I enjoy using the restricted palette, of browns and blues, of sepias. They emphasize tones and light, rather than colour.'
