Watercolours & charcoals for saleCharcoal is a very free medium; it can be rubbed and smudged to give soft effects and the effect of movement, and it can be tight and precise, which allows ease of getting ideas down on to paper. From there I add watercolour both as washes and as brush marks. Watercolour and charcoal requires a larger size than watercolour alone and I find this is an appropriate scale for representing birds and animals and the worlds they inhabit. It is a medium I use for painting branches, which I like for their shape and because they are a world within a world. Recent watercolour and charcoal paintings in the square series, can be viewed under ‘Square series’
'Much of his work is delicate, his washes creating wonderfully atmospheric effects. He has also developed a mixed medium of watercolour and charcoal, enabling him to paint with the luminosity of watercolours at a larger scale.'
'I really like branches because they're like a little microcosm and they get rid of the landscape - I don't want you to look at anything but the birds'
'I like the immediacy between the idea and the finished painting in this medium'.
'Jonathan's passion is truly bourne out by his work - many of his subjects look out of the painting at the viewer, giving you a presence and place in the picture and reminding us that nature is always watching us. It is no surprise that many of his works are sought after by those with an interest in country sports.'
